One-day workshop for staff supporting children and young people:

Informative & participative workshop to help staff gain an understanding of the effects of loss, death and grief on a child or young person and to recognise helpful ways of supporting a child or young people through their bereavement and which will include:

The concept and understanding of death in children and young people
Common responses to death in different age groups
How to talk about death and dying
What to expect from different types of death
DVD – that shows how a school supported bereaved children & their families through bereavement
Needs of bereaved children and young people
Frequently asked questions
How to recognise more complicated grief and when to refer to more specialised help
Further help and resources for staff and children and young people
Feelings, concerns and needs of staff facing a bereavement with a pupil or within the school community
Creating a school bereavement policy

Aim of course:

To develop the awareness and understanding of a child and young person’s perception of death.
To gain an understanding of the possible and often different reactions to grief in children and young people and to recognise that these variations are all part of a normal grieving process.
To identify how staff can help and support pupils through their grief.
To recognise when pupils are not coping with their grief and perhaps may need more specialised help.
Where to refer on to and possible sources of information and support for children, young people, their families and staff.
To help staff feel more confident and reassured that they can support bereaved pupils in a helpful way.
To identify the elements important in developing a school bereavement policy.

Trainer:

Jill Eastham is a qualified Counsellor, trainer and former nurse. She has supported young people and adults through grief, loss and trauma through her work as a Nurse, Cruse Bereavement Counsellor and former Manager of the charity SIS (Self-Injury Support in North Cumbria). She also brings to the training her own personal experience of bereavement as a young adult when her younger brother died from cancer. She offers part of her experience to highlight the difficulties that can be encountered by young people in facing serious illness and death within the family.

Through her own insights and the professional understanding that she has gained from her work, she will further your knowledge around grief and bereavement. A DVD will portray how death has affected children, their families and schools and what helped them all deal with the bereavement in a positive way.

An attendance certificate and resource pack will be provided for all course participants.
